Who is Stubhub?

According to Wikipedia:

StubHub is an American ticket resale broker and a primary ticket outlet. It is a subsidiary of StubHub Holdings, which also owns Viagogo. The company receives commissions from buyers and sellers on each order. StubHub was founded in 2000 by Eric Baker and Jeff Fluhr in San Francisco. It was sold to eBay in 2007 for US$310 million. Viagogo, led by Baker, repurchased StubHub in 2020 for approximately US$4 billion, forming Stubhub Holdings, which became a public company in 2025. StubHub has partnerships with professional sports leagues and companies including Major League Baseball and Anschutz Entertainment Group. It was the first company to purchase an advertisement patch on an NBA jersey. The company was a subject of investigations into ticket scalping by the United Kingdom's Competition and Markets Authority. The company has offices in Los Angeles, New York City, Taiwan, China, Ireland, and Switzerland

Stubhub overview

Having a Problem With StubHub? You May Have Legal Options.

Sold tickets on StubHub but haven't been paid?

Did StubHub cancel a completed sale, reverse your payment, charge you a penalty, or claim there was a problem with tickets you properly transferred?

Did you purchase expensive tickets that were never delivered, receive replacement tickets that were materially different from what you purchased, or spend weeks trying to obtain a refund?

Have you reached the point where repeated calls, chats, emails, and customer-service escalations are getting you nowhere?

Vondran Legal may be able to help.

Our law firm handles technology, internet, contract, intellectual-property, and commercial disputes, including disputes involving online platforms. We are evaluating and accepting appropriate StubHub matters involving sellers, buyers, businesses, and high-value ticket transactions.

In many StubHub disputes, the central question is no longer how many times you can call customer service. It is whether the dispute should be formally escalated through a contractual demand, StubHub's dispute-resolution procedures, or arbitration.

If StubHub owes you significant money or you are facing a substantial StubHub claim, contact Vondran Legal for a case evaluation.

Common StubHub Disputes

graphic showing common StubHub seller disputes

StubHub operates one of the world's largest secondary marketplaces for event tickets. Millions of transactions are completed successfully. But when a transaction goes wrong, significant amounts of money can be at stake.

Problems may include:

StubHub Seller Not Paid

One of the most serious problems for a ticket seller is straightforward: you sold and transferred the tickets, the event occurred, but you did not receive your money.

StubHub's published policies address seller payments and instruct sellers who have not been paid within the applicable timeframe to verify their payment information and contact customer service.

But what happens when you have already done that?

A legal dispute may arise when:

  • The tickets were valid and properly transferred;

  • The buyer received the tickets;

  • The event took place;

  • You complied with the applicable sale and transfer requirements;

  • Your payment information was accurate;

  • The expected payment date passed; and

  • StubHub nevertheless withheld, delayed, reversed, or canceled your payment.

The amount involved matters. A $100 dispute may not justify retaining counsel. A seller owed thousands, tens of thousands, or substantially more may have a very different economic incentive to pursue formal legal remedies.

StubHub Payment Delays

A payment delay can become particularly frustrating when customer service repeatedly says that the matter has been "escalated," "sent to the appropriate department," or is "under review," without providing a definitive answer.

If that describes your situation, preserve your evidence.  Take screenshots, save documents.

You may ultimately need to establish exactly what tickets were sold, when they were transferred, whether the buyer accepted the transfer, when the event occurred, what StubHub represented concerning payment, and what happened afterward.

StubHub Reversed My Seller Payment

Some disputes involve an even more troubling sequence:

The seller gets paid—and then the payment is reversed.

Possible disputes can involve:

  • Buyer complaints;

  • Chargebacks;

  • Alleged ticket defects;

  • Alleged delivery failures;

  • Claims concerning restricted or obstructed views;

  • Event cancellation or postponement;

  • Allegations that tickets differed from the listing;

  • Duplicate-ticket allegations;

  • Fraud investigations;

  • Payment-processing issues; or

  • StubHub's application of its seller policies.

A payment reversal does not necessarily mean StubHub is legally correct. The particular transaction, evidence, User Agreement, Seller Policies, communications, and applicable law must be reviewed.

StubHub Charged Me a Penalty

Seller disputes may also involve charges or penalties imposed after a transaction.

For example, a seller may contend that valid tickets were properly transferred but that StubHub nevertheless canceled the transaction, withheld the sale proceeds, charged the seller, or required the seller to reimburse costs.

These cases are highly fact dependent.

The important question is often:

What actually happened—and can StubHub prove that its contractual basis for imposing the charge applies to your transaction?

StubHub Buyer and Refund Disputes

Sellers are not the only people who can encounter problems.

Ticket purchasers may face disputes involving:

  • Tickets that never arrive;

  • Invalid tickets;

  • Tickets rejected at the venue;

  • Last-minute cancellation of an order;

  • Materially different replacement tickets;

  • Incorrect seating;

  • Obstructed-view or restricted-view issues;

  • Duplicate or previously used tickets;

  • Canceled events;

  • Refund delays;

  • Refund denials;

  • Problems involving StubHub's FanProtect Guarantee;

  • Travel expenses incurred for an event for which promised tickets were not delivered; and

  • Difficulty obtaining meaningful customer-service assistance.

Whether these circumstances create a viable legal claim depends on the facts, the contractual terms governing the transaction, applicable state law, damages, and other circumstances.

The 2026 StubHub World Cup Litigation

StubHub has faced significant scrutiny in 2026 involving ticket fulfillment and refunds.

Federal litigation filed in the Southern District of New York concerning 2026 World Cup tickets alleges, among other things, problems involving tickets that allegedly were not delivered or available as promised.

Case: In re StubHub World Cup Ticket Marketing & Sales Litigation

Court: U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York

Case No.: 1:26-cv-05569 (VSB) (RFT)

Filed: June 30, 2026

Judge: Vernon S. Broderick

The litigation has included allegations concerning ticket availability, fulfillment, refunds, StubHub's representations, and its FanProtect Guarantee.

These are allegations being litigated and should not be confused with findings that StubHub is liable in every disputed transaction.  Each case is different and depends on the facts.

The larger point for consumers is important:

Ticket-platform disputes can involve far more than a routine customer-service complaint.

For a major sporting event, concert, championship game, festival, or international event, a purchaser may have spent thousands or tens of thousands of dollars on tickets, airfare, hotels, transportation, and related expenses.

Those circumstances can justify a careful legal analysis.

Federal Trade Commission Action Against StubHub

StubHub has also faced federal regulatory scrutiny concerning ticket pricing.

In April 2026, the Federal Trade Commission announced a settlement under which StubHub agreed to provide $10 million in monetary relief to eligible consumers to resolve FTC allegations concerning the disclosure of mandatory ticket fees.

The FTC alleged that StubHub advertised ticket prices without clearly and conspicuously disclosing the full price consumers would have to pay, including mandatory fees, at the required point in the purchasing process.

The settlement also imposed injunctive provisions addressing representations concerning prices, fees, refunds, cancellations, and other material transaction information.

This was not merely an internet complaint or negative review. It was a federal enforcement action resulting in a court-approved order.

Other Government Scrutiny of StubHub

StubHub has faced other consumer-protection scrutiny as well.

In 2024, the Attorney General for the District of Columbia sued StubHub over alleged "drip pricing" and ticket fees. The District alleged that consumers were shown prices that did not adequately disclose mandatory charges until later in the purchasing process.

StubHub disputed those allegations and stated that its practices were consistent with applicable law and industry practices.

StubHub's public securities filings also disclose legal and regulatory proceedings affecting the company.

Government investigations and lawsuits do not establish that every individual StubHub customer has a claim. They do demonstrate, however, that ticket pricing, transaction disclosures, marketplace practices, and customer disputes have received serious regulatory attention.

Thousands of Consumer Complaints

StubHub disputes are not limited to isolated social-media posts.

As of September 2026, the Better Business Bureau's StubHub complaint page reports more than 12,000 complaints during the preceding three years, including thousands closed during the previous 12 months.

BBB complaints are allegations submitted by consumers and are not judicial findings. Some are resolved, some are disputed, and each complaint has its own facts.

Nevertheless, the volume demonstrates why buyers and sellers experiencing substantial financial disputes should preserve their records rather than assuming their experience is necessarily unique.

Did StubHub Recently Merge?

There is sometimes confusion concerning StubHub's corporate history.

StubHub was previously owned by eBay.

In 2020, viagogo acquired StubHub from eBay. The corporate parent later changed its name to StubHub Holdings, Inc., combining the StubHub and viagogo businesses under the corporate organization.

Competition authorities scrutinized that transaction, including the United Kingdom's Competition and Markets Authority.

More recently, StubHub underwent another major corporate transition: StubHub Holdings completed its initial public offering in September 2025 and began trading publicly under the ticker symbol STUB.

Today, StubHub Holdings operates the StubHub marketplace in North America and viagogo internationally.

These corporate developments do not themselves establish liability for an individual customer dispute. But they provide important context for understanding the scale and structure of the company with which a buyer or seller may be dealing.

StubHub Arbitration: You May Not Simply File a Lawsuit

Overview of StubHub arbitration section 22.1

This is one of the most important issues for anyone considering legal action against StubHub.

StubHub's current User Agreement contains an arbitration provision.

That can materially affect how a claim must be pursued.

Under StubHub's published dispute procedures, a party intending to pursue arbitration generally must first send a formal Notice of Dispute containing information concerning the claim and requested relief.

The agreement provides for a pre-arbitration period before an arbitration proceeding may be commenced.

If the dispute remains unresolved, the agreement provides for arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association (AAA).

This distinction matters.

Arbitration Is Not the Same as Filing a Lawsuit

Instead of presenting the case to a judge or jury in a traditional courthouse, the dispute may be presented to a neutral arbitrator.

Evidence can still matter enormously.

Depending upon the case, a claimant may need to establish:

  1. The applicable contractual terms;

  2. What StubHub promised;

  3. What the buyer or seller did;

  4. Whether the claimant complied with his or her obligations;

  5. What StubHub allegedly failed to do;

  6. The amount of money lost; and

  7. The appropriate legal remedy.

Courts have repeatedly confronted StubHub's arbitration provisions. In September 2026, for example, a federal judge in the Southern District of New York ordered claims in Sanquini v. StubHub, Inc. to arbitration.

The correct procedural path therefore needs to be analyzed before simply filing a lawsuit.

Attorney Steve® Tip:  Have your case reviewed.  If you file a lawsuit, you cam potentially waste time and money and face a "motion to compel arbitration" which would be an action in the cicil court to move the matter to arbitration, and to stay any attempt to litigate the case in court.  See my video here:

What Claims Might Exist Against StubHub?

Potential legal theories depend heavily upon the facts and applicable law. Depending upon the transaction, possible issues may include:

Breach of Contract

Did StubHub fail to perform an obligation imposed by the User Agreement, Seller Policies, FanProtect Guarantee, or another enforceable agreement?

Breach of the Implied Covenant of Good Faith and Fair Dealing

Even where a contract gives a company discretion, applicable law may impose limitations on exercising contractual discretion in a manner inconsistent with the agreement's purposes.

Consumer Protection Claims

Depending upon the jurisdiction and circumstances, state consumer-protection statutes may address deceptive, misleading, or unfair business practices.

False or Misleading Representations

A dispute may involve what was represented concerning the tickets, transaction, fees, refund, guarantee, payment, or resolution process.

Wrongful Withholding of Seller Proceeds

A seller who completed the transaction but did not receive the promised proceeds may have contractual or other remedies depending upon the facts.

Improper Charges or Penalties

If StubHub imposes a charge, reimbursement obligation, or penalty against a seller, the contractual and factual basis for that charge may need to be examined.

Refund and Guarantee Disputes

Buyers may have claims involving promised refunds, replacement tickets, or representations made under StubHub's FanProtect Guarantee.

Not every bad customer-service experience creates a viable lawsuit or arbitration claim. We evaluate the contract, evidence, amount in controversy, available damages, defenses, arbitration requirements, and economics of pursuing the matter.

Evidence You Should Save Immediately

If you are considering a StubHub claim, do not rely solely on information remaining available inside your StubHub account.

Download or screenshot relevant evidence now.

Preserve:

  • StubHub order numbers;

  • Sale confirmations;

  • Purchase confirmations;

  • Ticket listings;

  • Original ticket receipts;

  • Proof of ownership;

  • Ticket PDFs where applicable;

  • Screenshots of ticket descriptions;

  • Seat and section information;

  • Transfer confirmations;

  • Emails showing the buyer accepted the tickets;

  • Event date and venue information;

  • StubHub payment statements;

  • Bank statements;

  • PayPal or payment-processor records;

  • Notices of cancellation;

  • Chargeback notices;

  • Seller penalties;

  • Refund communications;

  • Customer-service emails;

  • Chat transcripts;

  • Customer-service case numbers;

  • Screenshots from your StubHub account;

  • Relevant terms and policies;

  • Travel receipts where relevant; and

  • A chronological timeline of what occurred.

The better your documentation, the easier it is for an attorney to evaluate your claim.

Build a StubHub Dispute Timeline

We recommend creating a simple chronology.

For example:

January 5: Purchased tickets for $7,800.

January 6: StubHub confirmed purchase.

March 14: Contacted StubHub because tickets had not arrived.

March 15: StubHub representative stated tickets would arrive within 48 hours.

March 18: No tickets received.

March 19: Requested refund.

March 20: Refund denied.

March 22: Event occurred.

March 25: Escalated to StubHub customer service.

April 2: StubHub promised additional investigation.

April 20: No response.

A chronology can transform hundreds of pages of emails and screenshots into a coherent legal story.

Seller Cases: Show That You Performed (Best Practice Tips)

StubHub ticket seller best practices

If you are a seller seeking payment, some of the most important evidence may establish:

I owned the tickets.

I accurately described the tickets.

I transferred the correct tickets.

I transferred them on time.

The buyer received or accepted them.

The event occurred.

I complied with StubHub's requirements.

StubHub was therefore required to pay me.

If StubHub contends otherwise, we want to identify precisely what contractual provision it relies upon and what evidence supports its position.

Buyer Cases: Document Exactly What You Were Promised

Buyers should similarly preserve evidence showing:

This is what I purchased.

This is what StubHub represented.

This is what I paid.

This is what I actually received—or did not receive.

This is what StubHub promised to do about it.

This is what StubHub ultimately did.

For high-value transactions, those distinctions can involve substantial damages.

How Vondran Legal Can Help With a StubHub Dispute

Items to include in StubHUB notice of dispute

Depending upon the circumstances, our representation may include:

1. Case Evaluation

We review the transaction, evidence, applicable StubHub terms, damages, communications, and procedural requirements.

2. Evidence Organization

A strong case starts with a coherent record. We identify the documents necessary to establish the transaction and damages.

3. Formal Demand

Where appropriate, we can prepare a formal legal demand explaining the factual and legal basis for payment or other relief.

4. Notice of Dispute

Where StubHub's agreement requires a contractual Notice of Dispute before arbitration, we can prepare and pursue that process.

5. Settlement Negotiations

Some disputes can be resolved without full arbitration if the parties meaningfully engage once the claim has been formally escalated.

6. AAA Arbitration

Where appropriate and economically justified, Vondran Legal can evaluate pursuing the claim through the American Arbitration Association.

7. Arbitration Hearing and Resolution

For matters proceeding through arbitration, we can develop the evidence, legal theories, damages presentation, briefing, witness testimony, and hearing strategy required to present the claim.

When Does It Make Sense to Hire a StubHub Lawyer?

Not every ticket dispute needs an attorney.

If StubHub owes you $75, hiring a lawyer probably makes little economic sense.

But consider a seller who is owed:

  • $5,000;

  • $10,000;

  • $25,000;

  • $50,000;

  • $100,000; or

  • more.

Or consider a professional or high-volume ticket seller dealing with numerous transactions, withheld proceeds, account restrictions, reversals, or penalties.

At that point, the dispute can become a meaningful commercial matter.

The same can be true for buyers who spent substantial amounts on major concerts, championship games, international sporting events, the World Cup, Super Bowl tickets, or premium entertainment packages.

High-Volume and Professional StubHub Sellers

Vondran Legal is particularly interested in evaluating significant seller disputes.

A professional seller may have considerably more at stake than the proceeds from a single ticket.

Potential issues can include:

  • Multiple unpaid transactions;

  • Large outstanding seller balances;

  • Seller account suspension;

  • Account termination;

  • Rolling payment holds;

  • Repeated payment reversals;

  • Buyer chargebacks;

  • Seller penalties;

  • Disputed replacement costs;

  • Fraud determinations;

  • High-value inventory;

  • Loss of access to an established selling account; and

  • Recurring disagreements over StubHub's interpretation of its Seller Policies.

For a seller operating a substantial ticket business, these issues may implicate significant cash flow and ongoing business operations.

"Customer Service Isn't Helping Me." What Now?

This is a common point at which people begin searching for a StubHub attorney.  Calls and recordings are made, but resolution may not be achieved, and frustration amounts as many people rely on their funds to pay their monthly bills and continue operating.

There is an important difference between a customer-service complaint and a legal claim.

Customer service may focus on solving an internal support ticket.

A formal legal demand focuses on:

  • Contractual obligations;

  • Evidence;

  • Damages;

  • Applicable law;

  • Required dispute procedures;

  • Settlement; and

  • Arbitration or other available legal remedies.

If you have called repeatedly without obtaining a meaningful resolution, making the twentieth customer-service call may not materially change the situation.

It may be time to determine whether the matter should be formally escalated.

Frequently Asked Questions About StubHub Disputes

Can I sue StubHub?

Possibly, but do not assume that filing a traditional lawsuit is the proper first step.  Here is general legal information to keep in mind.

StubHub's User Agreement contains arbitration and pre-arbitration dispute procedures that may apply. The enforceability and scope of those provisions can also become legal issues.

Your particular agreement and circumstances should be reviewed before deciding where and how to file a claim.

Does StubHub require arbitration?

StubHub's current published User Agreement contains an arbitration provision and specifies AAA arbitration procedures for covered disputes.

Which version of the agreement applies and whether a particular dispute must be arbitrated require case-specific analysis.

What is a StubHub Notice of Dispute?

StubHub's published agreement provides for a written Notice of Dispute before arbitration. The Notice identifies the claimant, describes the nature and basis of the dispute, and states the relief requested.

A properly prepared Notice can therefore be an important procedural step.

What if StubHub says my claim has been "escalated"?

Keep records of the escalation, including dates, case numbers, representative names, emails, and promised response dates.

An internal escalation does not necessarily substitute for any formal dispute notice required by the governing contract.

What if I transferred my tickets but StubHub says the buyer complained?

Preserve the transfer records immediately.

We will want to examine the ticket description, original purchase information, transfer confirmation, buyer acceptance, StubHub communications, and stated basis for the buyer's complaint.

Can StubHub take money back after paying me?

The answer depends upon the User Agreement, Seller Policies, basis for the reversal, and underlying facts. A payment reversal can potentially be disputed.

What if StubHub won't tell me why it withheld my money?

Document every attempt to obtain an explanation. If substantial money is involved, an attorney can evaluate whether a formal demand or dispute proceeding is warranted.

Can Vondran Legal handle a StubHub arbitration?

We evaluate StubHub disputes for potential formal demands, negotiations, Notices of Dispute, and arbitration proceedings, including appropriate AAA matters.

Do I need to live in California?

Not necessarily. Online-platform disputes frequently involve parties located in different states. Jurisdiction, governing law, arbitration provisions, and attorney-admission requirements must be evaluated for each matter.  Contact us to discuss your case.
