Introduction

This blog is written by California IP Lawyer Steve Vondran.  This is general legal information only and not legal advice.

Who is the International Intellectual Property Alliance?  Here is some general information.

According to their website:

"The International Intellectual Property Alliance (IIPA) is the umbrella organization through which members of the U.S. creative industries work together to reduce or eliminate barriers to their copyright-based products and services in key overseas markets."

According to the IIPA LinkedIn page:

"The U.S. copyright-based industries are one of the strongest and most dynamic sectors of the U.S. economy. The International Intellectual Property Alliance (IIPA) is a private sector coalition, formed in 1984, of trade associations representing U.S. copyright-based industries working to improve international protection and enforcement of copyrighted materials and open up foreign markets closed by piracy and other market access barriers."

IIPA Member Organizations

There are five major IP-related trade associations that are represented by the IIPA.

  • Association of American Publishers (AAP): According to their website: "The Association of American Publishers (AAP) represents the leading book, journal, and education publishers in the United States on matters of law and policy, advocating for outcomes that incentivize the publication of creative expression, professional content, and learning solutions. As essential participants in local markets and the global economy, our members invest in and inspire the exchange of ideas, transforming the world we live in one word at a time."

  • Entertainment Software Association (ESA): Represents video game developers and publishers such as Disney Interactive Studios, Mattel, Konami, Amazon, Bandai Namco, Capcom, Electronic Arts, Epic Games, Netflix, Riot Games, Roblox, Warner Brothers Games, Nintendo, and Sony Interactive Entertainment. Square Enix, Wizards of the Coast, Nintendo, Take-Two Interactive, Nexon, Tencent Games and others

  • Motion Picture Association (MPA): According to their website, they are the leading advocate of the film, television, and streaming industry around the world. They work in conjunction with the The Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment the world's leading content protection coalition dedicated to combatting the illegal acts of digital piracy that harm the thriving digital ecosystem.

  • Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA): According to their website: "We represent some of the most iconic record labels behind today's most popular artists—from Atlantic, Capitol, RCA, and Warner Records to Columbia, Motown, and countless others. We work to protect artists' creative freedom, fight for state and federal policies that strengthen the modern music ecosystem, and explain the work labels do to support their artist partners."

  • National Music Publishers' Association (NMPA): According to their website:

"Founded in 1917, the National Music Publishers' Association (NMPA) is the trade association representing all American music publishers and their songwriting partners. Its mission is to protect, promote, and advance the interests of music's creators. The NMPA is the voice of both small and large music publishers and is the leading advocate for publishers and their songwriter partners in the nation's capital and in every area where publishers do business. The goal of NMPA is to protect its members' property rights on the legislative, litigation, and regulatory fronts. In this vein, the NMPA continues to represent its members in negotiations to shape the future of the music industry by fostering a business environment that furthers both creative and financial success. The NMPA has remained the most active and vocal proponent for the interests of music publishers in the U.S. and throughout the world, a continuing tradition of which the association is very proud."

These organizations seek to promote and protect intellectual property rights worldwide.  Hope this has been helpful and provided some insight into the Worldwide IP ecosystem.
