In some cases, if you do not keep up with your maintenance on a perpetual license from Autodesk, you can unwittingly lost the rights to access prior versions of their software.  This can hurt a business that needs to access prior versions of AutoCAD or Revit, for example.  Autodesk legal counsel will tell you ITS ALL THERE IN THE FINE PRINT, but this ends up stinging many companies hard when the "software auditors" (some call the "software cops") accuse you of software copyright infringement.  This is not fun, believe me.  I have found Autodesk to take a very un-flexible approach to handling these types of cases, demanding that companies pony up for licensing fees.
