Vondran Legal was formed in 2004.  Originally, we were focused on real estate law.  Steve Vondran was a real estate broker and had mortgage lending experience. He started our business by sending out low-cost postcards to newly minted real estate agents, helping them incorporate their business and help with startup consulting and documents needed to comply with the real estate law and DRE commissioner regulations. This is how it all started.  Such a narrow focused (low-margin) approach to providing legal services.  I would also argue this is a super-niche (focusing on real estate law, but more specifically, helping newly licensed brokers). 

From there, after I had about 100 or so brokers on my case-sheet.  These brokers started needing additional services, such as:

• Real estate ethics complaints
• Local association legal issues
• Photo infringement allegations
• DRE audits and accusations
• Company agreements
• Commission disputes (including procuring cause)

This was a great start, and I had one of the top two leading DRE defense law practices in the country.  But then, things got crazy, and the financial meltdown hit.  Homeowners were forced into foreclosure with exotic adjustable arm loans, and negative amortization loans and no one really cared about this mass loss of the family homestead. 

This is when foreclosures SOARED and real estate brokers wanted to help and get involved.  This is when Vondran Legal real estate business literally quadrupled overnight.  We also continued to handle the above cases, but now there were a whole new slew of disputes and a need for a real estate law firm.  The new issues that evolved included:

• Truth in lending recission claims
• Broker advance fee agreements satisfactory to the department of real estate
• Claims against real estate brokers for predatory lending 
• Claims against parties for breach of fiduciary duties
• Problems with homeowners vs. loan servicers
• The list goes on

Vondran Legal® was also there, fighting more disputes than we could handle.  

After the meltdown reached a conclusion, I went back to my true love of law, and the topic I fell in love with at Whittier Law School in California - Entertainment, Social Media and Intellectual Property.  Following the meltdown, I made a tough decision to abandon my thriving real estate practice. However, I was ready, trained and experienced in litigation (having litigated against most of the major lenders and loan servicers, and having appeared as a real estate foreclosure analyst on Fox News three times).  I dumped it all, and deleted my real estate blogs.  I then restarted the process all over again, focusing on intellectual property law, and, in particular, copyright law, where I saw the trends growing, and the limited number of lawyers skilled in the copyright laws.

From this standpoint, I launched again, becoming the number one copyright infringement defense law firm in the United States for the years 2020, 2021 (according to Unicourt and number of defense cases handled), and very likely for the years 2022 to the present (although this has not yet been confirmed).

All of this was done with internet social media marketing, podcasting, building a YouTube legal channel, and working really hard to build authority will hundreds of legal posts and videos.  

What I have done, anyone can do, but not without unrivaled work discipline.  I was approached by Clio Software this year to join them in a legal webinar to share with new lawyers some of the important things I have learned over the years that have helped me build my business, not once, but twice—in two different legal niches over the course of 20 years.
